Ruritan National

The Ruritan organization was started in 1928 in Holland, Virginia. Tom Downing and Jack Gwaltney, co-founders of Ruritan, recognized the need for an organization where community leaders could meet and discuss ways to make their community a better place in which to live.  Now, Ruritan National has nearly 30,000 members throughout the United States working to improve local communities. Unlike most civic service organizations, Ruritan rarely has national programs.  Rather, each club serves the needs of their local community through fellowship, goodwill and community service.

Mission Statement:
Ruritan is a national organization dedicated to improving communities and building a better America through Fellowship, Goodwill and Community Service.
